A friend recently had torn out a purple bathroom suite from her house in France. I did recognise its value and period charm, now known as 'vintage', like everything not new. I even recommended its keeping as the authentic taste of a bye gone age. Then I tried to promote its salvage and England was on my mind: the 'old country' where antique is the new nouvelle. It could have stayed in France and gone to Emmaus, I suggested it, joining the outdoor ranks of all the other coloured porcelains outdated and unplumbed. But the nighbour had it for his horse, who neighed contentedly, and why not, in Faugers where only rank wine ends up in the troughs of the undiscerning; quadrupeds as well as bipeds lap it up. The White Horse is staggering? Don't you see, there is a purple patch in those blue remembered hills.
